Greg Wise and the Bears are coming off an interesting season, which saw them draft one of the most talent squads in Super-League. This season he has done the same, with some really clever drafting techniques and opportunistic selections. He is now faced with a similar challenge as last season.
{SL MEDIA} I think I know the answer to this one, but what was your main focus coming into the draft?
{GW} My main focus, as it always is, was to get the best possible player in each round. However, if the best player in that round won't drink beers after the game, they won't be a bear.
{SL MEDIA} and there it is!
{GW} Enacting the 4B’s process! Bears, Boys, Beers & Ball. In no necessary order!
{SL MEDIA} So I guess you executed another successful draft at the helm of the Bears?
{GW} Of course I did, I always do. Tell me what planet Kem Samuel is a 3rd rounder, Wyatt a 4th and Joshy a 5th and every single one of them is in for beers.
{SL MEDIA} You’ve built some hype around this squad, how do you feel your franchise will go this season?
{GW} I think on paper I've drafted one of the better teams. But it'll really come down to if we can gel and play as a team. I think we'll be really hard to beat, especially on boards.
{SL MEDIA} The Bears are probably top 3 overall (SL History), when it comes to uniform design. Tell us a little bit about your kit for this season.
{GW} Dale and the guys at TTW are always really good at listening to my requests when it comes to uniforms. It’s pretty hard to beat a bear’s unit, and this season is no different.
{SL MEDIA} Which franchise has the best list? (aside from your own)
{GW} I really think the Foxes are ones to look at. Any team with Leon and Flanners on it is going to be hard to beat. And Leon’s an experienced vet who knows what to build around the pair. I also had a run with the Camels last night and they seemed very strong, they’ve got such good synergy this early.
{SL MEDIA} Who will win the MVP?
{GW} It’s pretty hard to go past Jeff Reid on that one. Dudes a bucket machine.
{SL MEDIA} Who will win the DPOY
{GW} FLANNERS don’t be silly. He’s a monster defender and the team that they have will really let him show his stuff.
{SL MEDIA} Who will win the Steal of the Draft
{GW} Steal of the draft 2020 goes to Daniel Alvarez, the kid can ball. Can’t wait to show you what my 6th rounder does.
{SL MEDIA} If you could have one player from another team, who could it be?
{GW} I’d have to say Lucas Plozza, easily one of my favourite past bears and all-round good bloke. At least he's in good hands on the mambas.
